Hi guys, today I'll be sharing all about THE FACE SHOP's Yehwadam First Serum!
Not to be confused with THE FACE SHOP's The Therapy First Serum which I reviewed 2 years back! This new product is an extension to the Yehwadam line, THE FACE SHOP's premier anti-ageing line.
I first saw this product on THE FACE SHOP Korea's Instagram back in August, and it's finally available here in Malaysia for me to try!
This product aims to balance the skin's qi. If you're not familiar with qi, it's a term in traditional medicine that is also known as "vital energy". A balanced qi means a perfectly-functioning body, and it's usually when your qi is imbalanced that you start to see problems popping up like illness and skin problems.
WHAT IS IT
THE FACE SHOP's Yehwadam First Serum is the first moisture-enhancing anti-ageing serum which aims to balance your skin's qi. It has a unique complex called Gyu-Hwa-Bang made of traditional Korean herbs and plants.
Usually, when our skin's qi is imbalanced and problems start to pop up, our skin gives out 3 distress signals: Aging (patchy skin, fine lines), Dryness (lack of moisture) and Stressors (acne, excess sebum, sensitivity). The Yehwadam First Serum aims to address these 3 signals by replenishing the skin's qi and boosting the skin's inner strength, prepping your skin and boosting the absorption of your following skincare products as well.
WHERE TO BUY
The Yehwadam First Serum is available nation-wide in all of THE FACE SHOP's stores, as well as in their e-store. It comes in a 140ml bottle (quite above standard quantity compared to other K-beauty brands) and costs RM179.
Considering the amount of product, I think the pricing is pretty fair. Definitely more bang for your buck. For a limited time, you also get a free tote bag when you purchase the Yehwadam First Serum.

The packaging I got was actually in collaboration with Oamul Lu, an artist from China. I first came across him from his collab collection with Charles & Keith, and apparently, he had a collab with THE FACE SHOP as well!

INGREDIENTS
This product is paraben-free, sulfate-free, alcohol-free, silicone-free, EU allergen-free and fungal acne safe.
After analyzing the ingredients, I found that most of them had an EWG green rating (with a few yellow ones), meaning that this product is highly unlikely to irritate the skin.
It has ingredients that help with brightening (Niacinamide), anti-ageing (Niacinamide, Ceramide-3, Adenosine) as promotes wound healing (Panthenol). It also contains highly moisturizing ingredients that those with dry skin will enjoy (Panthenol, Beta-Glucan, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin) as well as skin-soothing ingredients that those with oily skin will love (Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract).
Above I mention Gyu-Hwa-Bang, key complex. This unique blend features 3 specially-selected herbs:
1. Ginseng - Korea's most famous herb, it replenishes energy, increases moisture levels and relieves fatigue. It also promotes collagen synthesis and cell activation, effectively preventing premature ageing.
2. Safflower - known as one of the 10 greatest herbal medicines, Safflower is known to improve blood circulation and prevent inflammation.
3. Goji Berry - a superfood with anti-oxidants whose anti-ageing and anti-oxidant properties increase skin hydration and promote firmness.
FRAGRANCE AND TEXTURE
The formula is quite refreshing, and it's very hydrating once you apply it! It's quite liquidy and absorbs into the skin very quickly. It also gives the skin a cooling effect, and the scent is not bad/quite fresh in my opinion.
HOW TO USE
When I first saw it on IG I was quite confused because if it was called a serum, why did it look like an essence?
Well according to THE FACE SHOP, this product is not supposed to replace your essence/serum, but more of an additional step to supplement your skincare routine. After cleansing, you're supposed to apply it directly to your skin (either by patting or by wiping on).

Aside from applying it directly to your skin, you can also use it as a refreshing and energizing mist, or as a soothing & glow-enhancing mask.
MY REVIEW AND VERDICT
After using this product and incorporating it into my skincare routine for a while, I can say that it's quite nice. Although it's recommended to not use this to replace your essence, I use this more as an essence because I layer enough serums as it is and I didn't see the point of layering 2 essences lol. If ever I wanted to layer essences, I would only use one.That said, I quite like the texture of this! It's comfortable and hydrating, and once layer is pretty good for the day. At night I layer 2-3 layers, let it seep into my skin and follow up with my serums.
For a week I tried just using it by itself with no serum, and at that time I found myself wanting to layer more (3-4 layers at night). After a week I did notice that my skin looked more alive, and it was awesome since I always sleep late.
After adding a serum the following weeks, I found that I only needed 1-2 layers. It did help my serums absorb better/faster, and I can see how it helps boost the absorption.
WILL I REPURCHASE?
Anti-ageing care is a process, and I would definitely recommend this for those looking to start their anti-ageing journey or if you're in your 20s/30s. If you're someone more mature, you might want something richer as I think you'll want to layer a lot of layers if you use this.If you're someone like me with oily skin, you don't have to worry about any discomfort. This product was super comfy and it didn't break out my skin as well.
Would I repurchase it? For the price, I think I would! I quite like the texture and the effects it has given me so far, and I can't wait to see what other benefits it will give me in the long run. If you're in you're 20s like me, I think you'll like this product too.
