Welcome to Episode 5 of Cafe Hopping with Eros and Fufy! For this episode we visited Black Kettle in Beach Street and we were joined this time by Gerald and my siblings Euri and Yana. For our Consumer Behaviour class we actually had to approach a business and come up with a promotional campaign for them, so this trip doubled as a review visit and an assignment interview session with the owner.
After interviewing the owner, Mr. Tan, we knew more about Black Kettle's brief history. The cafe opened in August this year (2015) and they emphasize a lot on quality.
Address:105, Beach St, Georgetown, 10200 George Town, Penang, Malaysia
Business Hours: 7:30am to 11:00pm. Opens Daily.
When we first searched up about Black Kettle, we thought parking would be a problem and that the location was a bit inconvenient. It turns out that there is a car park nearby and a 6 storey parking building just walking distance from the cafe!
Unlike other cafes, Black Kettle triple as a cafe, bistro and bakery. Similar to Love a Loaf, they have fresh bread available. What sets Black Kettle apart is that their pastries are made by the only German master baker (or something like that) on Penang Island!

Don't mind the cobwebs, they were decorated for Halloween.
Their coffee is on another level as well. The owner wanted to emphasize on quality, so they only use award winning beans that have won the Golden Bean Award.
They have cakes as well and the variety is quite nice. The best thing about it is that they're quite cheap!
Fufy and I didn't really get to try the bread, cakes and coffee when we visited because we were starved and our budget was quite tight. We plan to revisit soon, though, so keep an eye out for that.
Contrary to its simple outer, the inside is very spacious and their aesthetic is quite nice.

MENU
If you've been keeping up with my cafe posts you'll notice that I've been having carbonara quite a lot. They don't have carbonara on their menu, and I took it as a sign from above to try something else hahaha.
Now, on with the food porn shots!
The table was so full so the table was very instagrammable hahaha.
Harney & Sons Organic English Breakfast | RM12
Harney & Sons Earl Grey Supreme | RM12
This was Yana's order and after trying it I found it to be so-so. There wasn't anything really special about it except for the bread used (which I found savory but would have preferred it thicker).
I'll rate this a 2.7/5.
Benedict Style Poached Egg | RM24
Fufy ordered this and she said that it was good, the portion was nice (for people who don't want to eat too much) and that she would have like it better if they had more rockets. I tried it and the eggs were really fluffy, but personally if it was my order I would want like 3 more.
She rated it a 3/5 and I rate it the same.
150 gram Beef Burger | RM24
This was my order and I was satisfied with it. The meat was cooked to perfection and the caramelized onions really complimented the meat. The bread wasn't the typical sesame seed breaded bun as well!
I rate this a 4/5! I'd definitely recommend this dish!
Croque Madame | RM18
This was Euri's order and it was literally just a fancy sandwich with the egg on top lol. Euri said that the bread was not too burnt or too soft, just right. The insides (ham, egg) were just right, unlike other sandwiches that are too thick and overflow. He enjoyed the cherry tomatoes and said that they gave a savoury touch to the sandwich.
He said he would rate it a 3/5 because although he thought it was nice, it felt like it wasn't enough.
Aussie Steak Sandwich | RM28
Gerald's was the last dish to arrive. I liked how the bread was different from mine and that there was 2 types of meat in it. It's a shame that I didn't get to take picture, but aside from the patty there's also a few slices of ham.
Gerald said that it was good and after trying it myself, I'd rate it a 4/5 as well. This dish is for meat lovers!
The owner was also kind enough to let me see the second floor of the building which they're planning to expand into soon. The area is 4000 square feet and can accommodate up to 200 pax. He mentioned that they're planning to have it as a place for events such as parties and gatherings. He didn't give a specific date, but if you're interested do drop by and ask them if the place is ready for bookings.
They bill came out higher than we expected because they charged both GST (6%) and Service Charge (10%). That's definitely a con because having GST is bad enough, having to pay for service charge as well is just sad.
Aside from that, I liked the food and the ambiance of the whole place. After a few suggestions from my friends who have visited before, I shall try their Soft Shell Crab Burger the next time. I'll also be sure to try out their coffee, bread and cakes!
To end this post, here are some fab pictures of Euri and Gerald. (Yes, my brother has blue hair. Nice, right?)
